Highlighting who we are
What is the Flashwrite project
Our communities are full of wonderful stories that speak about who we are as people and the places where our characters are built.
These are stories of personal realisation, struggle, triumph and sublime observation.
In these extraordinary times it seems now, more than ever, remembering our past is a key element to maintaining the fabric of our communities.
We don't want these stories to fall between the cracks of our busy lives and get lost forever.
And after all, the past has always served as a blueprint for a re-imagining of the future.
FlashWrite will be a chance for locals to submit their stories and have them published on the Gunning Arts Festival website.
A selection of works will be featured as readings and performances at the
2021 Gunning Arts Festival.
A booklet with a selection of stories will also be printed and available
for sale at the Festival.
How To get involved
The Gunning Arts Festival Committee would like to invite members of the community
to submit short stories to the FlashWrite project.
FlashWrite stories are short stories of no more than 1500 words.
For this project, we are particularly seeking stories that encapsulate something of your life or the lives of those around you on the 2021 Gunning Arts Festival theme of ‘Rejuvenation’.
We welcome works from young and old alike and you don't need to have had any experience at story writing.

Workshop your story
The Committee will be holding two free writing workshops prior to the
Gunning Arts Festival in 2021 to help people with their work.
The Second Workshop in this series will be publicised soon.
The first workshop explored what a ‘flash’ story is and local writer, Mr Greg Baines, was on hand to guide participants through the structure and work, and provide tips and tricks for writing a really concise story.
The second workshop will focus on editing and shaping to help polish work
ready for submission.
(Details of second workshop coming soon - watch this space!)
How stories will be selected
A community-led panel comprising representatives of relevant cultural groups in Gunning will select a representative sample of stories for online publication, performance at the 2021 Gunning Arts Festival and/or publication in a booklet compilation of stories.
We will seek the author’s permission before publishing any story
and will work with authors as required on presentation.
The FlashWrite project is sponsored by BJCE Australia’s Biala and Gullen Range Wind Farms and supported by an Upper Lachlan Cultural Funding Program grant. The Upper Lachlan Cultural Funding Program is funded by the Upper Lachlan Shire Council.
