The Picture House Art Prize is a non-acquisitive art prize open to Australian visual artists 18 years of age and over and will be a publicised event of the Gunning Arts Festival 2020.

Terms & conditions
The winner of The Picture House Art Prize will receive a Matisse Prize Pack valued at $500 from our sponsor Derivan, plus an exclusive offer to hold a solo exhibition at The Picture House Gallery in 2021.
Artists are invited to interpret and respond to the theme: ‘Celebrating Nature’.
Entries in the following disciplines will be accepted: painting, drawing, printing, photography, multi-media (with the exception of moving or projected digital image or ephemeral matter). Two-dimensional (2D) entries will not exceed 150cm [W] x 150cm [H] including frame. All 2D works are to be ready to hang with D-rings and wire. Works on paper must be framed. A stretched canvas is considered framed.
A maximum of 2 works per artist may be submitted for entry.
Each supplied image must be:
- JPEG format
- hi-resolution no less than 300 dpi - file size no larger than 5MB
Image file name must include the artist’s name, title of work and the image number (eg Smith_Celebrating Nature_1). Images must be of an exhibition ready, completed artwork. Any additional material supplied with required support material will not be considered.
The winning artwork will be judged by visitors to the gallery via a peoples choice voting process.
Selection of finalists will be made by Max Cullen and Margarita Georgiadis (artists and proprietors of The Picture House Gallery). Decisions made by the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Finalists will be selected from digital applications that best demonstrate:
- artistic merit and professionalism
- conceptual vitality in expressing the theme Celebrating Nature.
- alignment of work with aims outlined in artist’s statement.

Delivery of Selected Works: 11 & 12 April 2020 (successful applicants will be notified of delivery details).
Official Exhibition Opening: The Picture House Gallery 5 - 7pm 18 April 2020

SUBMITTING AN ENTRY
Each entry will require an entry fee and a completed online application form including artist statement and supporting image(s). Entries must be for sale during the exhibition. The gallery charges 33% on the sale of each work. Please take this into consideration when pricing your work. Entries must be submitted via the online entry form below only.
Late entries will not be accepted.
A non-refundable administration fee of $20 per entry is payable by credit/debit card upon submission of the application.
The completed online application must include:
- artist’s contact, artwork’s title, dimensions and materials
- artwork’s retail price
- image(s) of artwork
- artist’s statement (150 words max). The artist’s statement should articulate the artistic and conceptual intent of the submitted work in response to the theme: Celebrating Nature.
Finalists work will be exhibited as a festival event of the Gunning Arts Festival at The Picture House Gallery in Gunning NSW.
The exhibition will be managed by the The Picture House Gallery. All shortlisted work must be delivered ready to hang or install during gallery business hours (delivery details to be advised to successful applicants).
Hanging/installation of finalist 2D works will be the responsibility of The Picture House Gallery. Entries must be for sale during the exhibition. A commission of 33% will be withheld by The Picture House Gallery. If the finalist is registered for GST the retail price must be GST inclusive. The finalist agrees and appoints The Picture House Gallery as sole agent of any and all artwork available for sale from the exhibition for the duration of The Picture House Art Prize 2020. If the artist is represented by a gallery, it is their responsibility to negotiate the gallery’s commission for work sold.
Artwork must be adequately packed for delivery. The original packaging will be retained for re-use at collection. Please ensure the packaging is able to be re-used and adequate quantities are supplied. Instructions for re-packaging of a complicated or delicate nature should accompany each entry.
Freight and insurance of artworks will be the responsibility of the finalist. Finalists are responsible for maintaining at their own cost all insurances necessary to cover artwork for damages, theft, or loss during transport and delivery to and from Gunning, NSW and for the time the artwork is on exhibition or in the custody of The Picture House Gallery. It is the artist’s responsibility to organise and cover the cost of the return of any unsold artworks. Local artists may collect artworks in person from the gallery during specified times (TBC) at the conclusion of the exhibition. Artwork cannot be stored after the conclusion of the exhibition without prior negotiation.
GUIDELINES FOR ARTWORKS
The entry must be created solely by the named artist. Reproductions of original artwork are not eligible for entry.
- Entry must be clearly labelled on reverse side with artist’s name, phone number and title of the work.
- Artworks must be exhibition-ready (e.g. works on paper must be framed).
- Artwork must be ready for hanging with flat D-rings to be fastened securely to support 10cm from the top edge.
- Artwork that has not cured, is wet or is incomplete will not be accepted and will be returned directly to the artist at their own cost.
- Artwork that is deemed impractical for display or installation due to requirements for technical support will not be accepted and will be returned directly to the artist at their own cost.
* Artwork that presents an unacceptable risk to the safety or security of exhibition staff or visitors will not be accepted.
- Artwork that infringes the copyright, moral rights or any other legal rights of any third party will not be accepted.
Eligible artists must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and be 18 years or over at time of entry. There is a limit of two entries submitted by eligible artists.
Personal information supplied in the entry form will only be used for administration of The Picture House Gallery and will not be supplied to a third party.
The Picture House Gallery is not bound to accept any entry and at its discretion may refuse an entry into The Picture House Art Prize 2020. The Picture House Gallery may, at its discretion, alter the conditions of entry at any time. The Picture House Gallery does not take any responsibility for damage, theft, loss of artwork including during transport and delivery to and from the event or for the time the artwork is on exhibition or in its custody.
To the extent permitted by law the artist releases The Picture House Gallery, successors, officers, employees, contractors, volunteers and agents from any action, claim, liability, cost, expense, damage suffered or incurred by the artist arising out of or in connection with an act or omission of The Picture House Gallery.
To the extent permitted by law the artist indemnifies and keeps indemnified The Picture House Gallery and their successors, officers, employees, contractors, volunteers and agents from any action, claim, liability, cost, expense, damage suffered or incurred by The Picture House Gallery arising out of or in connection with an act or omission of the artist.
A completed entry form indicates that in the event the artist is shortlisted as a finalist, he or she authorises the reproduction of images of their artwork and extracts from their artist’s statement for publicity, catalogue, website, social media and associated publications.
