The Picture House Art Prize is a non-acquisitive art prize open to Australian visual artists 18 years of age and over and will be a publicised online event of the Gunning Arts Festival 2021.

PRIZES
The Winner of The Picture House Art Prize will receive a Matisse Prize Pack of art materials valued at $500 from our sponsor Derivan, plus an exclusive offer to hold a solo exhibition at The Picture House Gallery in 2022 which also includes an online exhibition featured on the gallery website.
PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
Will be awarded to the artwork that receives the most online ‘votes’ by the public. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive a Derivan Prize Pack of art materials valued at $200.
THEME
Artists are invited to interpret and respond to the Gunning Arts Festival theme: ‘Rejuvenation’.
ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS
Entries in the following disciplines will be accepted: painting, drawing, printing, photography, multi-media (with the exception of moving or projected digital image or ephemeral matter). Two-dimensional (2D) entries will not exceed 150cm [W] x 150cm [H] including frame.
A maximum of 2 works per artist may be submitted for entry.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Covid-19 Restrictions all artwork images must be uploaded digitally. The gallery will not accept any artworks in person. Finalists works, Judging and Exhibition will be an online event.
Each supplied image must be:
- JPEG format
- hi-resolution no less than 300 dpi - file size no larger than 5MB
Image file name must include the artist’s name, title of work and the image number (eg Smith_Celebrating Nature_1). Images must be of an exhibition ready, completed artwork. Any additional material supplied with required support material will not be considered.
JUDGING PANEL
The winning artwork will be judged by Max Cullen and Margarita Georgiadis (artists and proprietors of The Picture House Gallery). Decisions made by the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into. The winner of the People’s Choice Award is judged by visitors to the online gallery via a voting process.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Finalists will be selected from digital applications that best demonstrate:
- artistic merit and professionalism
- originality
- conceptual vitality in expressing the theme ‘Rejuvenation’.
- alignment of work with aims outlined in artist’s statement.

Due to Covid-19 Restrictions our Exhibition and Competition is now an online event, artists are not required to send their artworks to the gallery. Successful entries will be uploaded to an online art exhibition for viewing and voting as an event of the online Gunning Arts Festival 2021.

SUBMITTING AN ENTRY
Each entry will require an entry fee and a completed online application form including artist statement and supporting image(s). Entries must be for sale during the exhibition. The gallery charges 33% on the sale of each work. Please take this into consideration when pricing your work. Entries must be submitted via the online entry form below only.
Late entries will not be accepted
ADMINISTRATION FEE
A non-refundable administration fee of $20 per entry is payable by credit/debit card upon submission of the application.
The completed online application must include:
- artist’s contact, artwork’s title, dimensions and materials
- artwork’s retail price
- image(s) of artwork
- artist’s statement (100 words max). The artist’s statement should articulate the artistic and conceptual intent of the submitted work in response to the theme: ‘Rejuvenation’.
EXHIBITIONS
Finalists work will be exhibited as an online festival event of the Gunning Arts Festival via The Picture House Gallery website.
The exhibition will be managed by the The Picture House Gallery. Entries must be for sale during the online exhibition. A commission of 33% will be withheld by The Picture House Gallery. If the finalist is registered for GST the retail price must be GST inclusive. The finalist agrees and appoints The Picture House Gallery as sole agent of any and all artwork available for sale from the exhibition for the duration of The Picture House Art Prize 2021. If the artist is represented by a gallery, it is their responsibility to negotiate the gallery’s commission for work sold.
GUIDELINES FOR ARTWORKS
The entry must be created solely by the named artist.
Artwork that infringes the copyright, moral rights or any other legal rights of any third party will not be accepted.
OTHER INFORMATION
Eligible artists must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and be 18 years or over at time of entry. There is a limit of two entries submitted by eligible artists.
Personal information supplied in the entry form will only be used for administration by The Picture House Gallery and will not be supplied to a third party.
The Picture House Gallery is not bound to accept any entry and at its discretion may refuse an entry into The Picture House Art Prize 2021. The Picture House Gallery may, at its discretion, alter the conditions of entry at any time.
To the extent permitted by law the artist releases The Picture House Gallery, successors, officers, employees, contractors, volunteers and agents from any action, claim, liability, cost, expense, damage suffered or incurred by the artist arising out of or in connection with an act or omission of The Picture House Gallery.
To the extent permitted by law the artist indemnifies and keeps indemnified The Picture House Gallery and their successors, officers, employees, contractors, volunteers and agents from any action, claim, liability, cost, expense, damage suffered or incurred by The Picture House Gallery arising out of or in connection with an act or omission of the artist.
A completed entry form indicates that in the event the artist is shortlisted as a finalist, he or she authorises the reproduction of images of their artwork and extracts from their artist’s statement for publicity, catalogue, website, social media and associated publications.
